Welcome Message from Carol Jenkins, CEO
World Learning believes that the best hope for peace, justice, and sustainability lies in bringing people together. Through cultural immersion, experiential learning, and information sharing, our programs equip others to collaboratively address the most pressing issues of our time.
Throughout my years at World Learning, I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet with many of our participants, partners, and alumni—a global network of learners. Our programs help them understand other cultures, master new skills, and cultivate networks. Our teaching and training methodologies empower them to find locally relevant, sustainable, and implementable solutions. Our approaches emphasize flexibility and adaptability that help them tackle real-world problems. They, in turn, make extraordinary changes in their lives and communities.
Please join us—and those we work with and serve around the world—in our pursuit to create a brighter and better future for all.

Program Description
World Learning partnered with the Pakistani enterprise AZ Corp Entertainment to develop a series of educational comic books aimed at Pakistani students in grades two through five.
The series, Sheeba and the Private Detectives, follows a gang of children who travel around Pakistan using science, math, and problem-solving skills to solve mysteries. Written for emerging readers, the stories incorporate rich, evocative vocabulary, as well as humor and adventure while simultaneously integrating key STEM facts. The characters come from varying backgrounds and represent different ethnicities – presenting opportunities to also tackle concepts of ethics and social justice, while highlighting Pakistan’s amazing geography and rich cultural and historical heritage. The comics encouraged children to read for pleasure while also learning more about the world around them in a context where print resources for children are severely limited. During this 18-month project, funded by the U.K.’s Department for International Development, World Learning reached 12,500 children in 200 schools, including 100 schools in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir where World Learning implemented the Pakistan Reading Project.
Program Goals
- Developed a series of educational comic books that encouraged children to read for pleasure.
- Taught children about science, math, ethics, history, and culture through engaging stories.
- Provided printed reading materials for children in areas where these resources were severely limited.
